The city's historic preservation pages record that Huntsville adopted an ordinance allowing the creation of historic districts in 1971. Twickenham was designated in 1972, Old Town in 1974, and Five Points was established as a district in 1999.

Old streets, tight working room

Houses close to the pavement, narrow drives, on-street parking and limited turning space all restrict equipment. A lift that needs to set up in the road is a different proposition here from a suburban cul-de-sac. Ask where the truck and the chipper are expected to stand.

Neighboring property is close on both sides. Say what sits over the fence, because a drop zone measured only within your own boundary is not a real drop zone in this kind of street.

Mature canopy over early houses

Large trees over older roofs, older gutters and older service runs raise the stakes on a limb failure. Deadwood over a footpath used by people walking to the shops is a target in the sense the Extension guidance means, and belongs at the front of the list.

Root systems in a street like this have usually been cut at some point for a drive, a pavement or a service trench. Huntsville's city arborist makes the point in the Green Team's material that roots do not simply mirror the crown, so past excavation matters even where the canopy looks fine.

Placement rules bite harder on a narrow street

The city's collection rules want carts out by 7 a.m., within two feet of the curb and at least five feet clear of mailboxes and utility poles, with bags under 50 pounds. On a tight frontage that is genuinely hard to arrange, so plan where a brush pile can legally sit before the cutting starts.

Contractor debris is excluded from that program regardless, and there is rarely anywhere convenient to stage a pile here. Specify that the wood leaves with the crew rather than waiting on the frontage.
