Trees near power lines in Huntsville

The utility's own method, in its own words

Huntsville Utilities' line clearance program publishes three categories. Side trim covers trees growing along the side, into, or toward electric power lines or utility space. Drop crotch covers trees directly under and growing into lines, which should be removed or trimmed.

Overhang covers limbs above or outside the boundary of Huntsville Utilities specifications or the City of Huntsville tree ordinance that could break and fall downward. Those limbs are removed rather than left.

Why the cuts look the way they do

The utility places emphasis on natural trimming to laterals, and describes the lateral branch trimming technique used on its system as a recommended best practice of the International Society of Arboriculture. That is why a cleared tree has an open side rather than a flat hedge face.

Street trees taken out for clearance get replaced

The city side of this is organized. The Urban Forestry and Horticulture division manages public trees, administers the tree ordinance, and cooperates with Huntsville Utilities in programs including the replacement of street trees removed for power line clearance. The Tree Commission covers maintenance, removals, planting, replacement and public education for public trees.

What is still a private tree job

A tree in your garden clear of conductors, a dead limb over your own roof, a stump, a fence line: those stay private work. The distinction is proximity to energised equipment, not who owns the tree. If you are unsure which side of the line a job falls on, ask the utility before anyone raises a saw.

Never place brush or debris where it interferes with a service drop either. Madison's collection guidelines tell residents not to put material beneath or next to power or cable lines, low hanging branches, mailboxes, traffic signs or on top of sewer drains, and New Hope's street department says plainly not to place trash or limbs under power lines.

Plant so the problem does not repeat

A tall-growing species under a distribution line guarantees the same conversation in fifteen years. Choose the mature height for the position. The city's forestry division provides public education on the selection, planting and care of trees, which is a better starting point than replacing like for like.
